Both the “drone star” and Vanessa Stockard’s ‘Kevin in the Void’ are my go-to profile pictures when it comes to choosing a profile picture. While the drone star has history from my childhood playing Halo, ‘Kevin in the Void’ is just a-dork-able and I believe fits me well.

Honestly? I always stuck with the drone star as my default choice for a profile picture for a while. I only found ‘Kevin in the Void’ around a decade ago, so prior to that it was usually the drone star. HOWEVER, after creating and using Discord frequently, I was changing my profile at whim for shits and giggles. Then I found Kevin and haven’t considered swapping it since!

I… Don’t remember… What I do remember was using the the cheese pieces as my profile picture from Windows XP and Windows Vista. In fact, my Windows 7 machine I use for retro gaming STILL uses the same Vista chess profile picture for notalgia purposes.
Tell me more about ‘drone star’
The “drone star” is an emblem combination partly introduced in Halo 2 (the foreground ‘drone’ symbol) and alongside Halo 3’s more established background (the ‘star’) is how it came to be. My first Halo game I owned was Halo 3: ODST and back then among Bungie’s Xbox 360 titles the foreground, background and colors were randomized. Not only is Halo 3: ODST one of my favorite games, but upon booting it up for the first time and seeing my firefight career, the game generated the drone star and I… Never changed it. I thought I it was rather unique but overtime I became more attached to it. Eventually telling my own mother “I want this to be my first tattoo”. My only regret is not getting this tattoo sooner at 18 instead of at 23.
Ever since I adopted ‘Kevin in the Void’ as my default profile picture, I never fully separated from it. Instead kind of adopting it as an ‘unofficial logo’ as you see here on the website and on YouTube. For better (or worse) this emblem has become a relic of that time. You can still use it on Halo 4, Halo: The Master Chief Collection and now Halo 5: Guardians (although it didn’t ship in the game initially). I haven’t bothered to see if it is present in Halo Infinite, but regardless it still feels like ‘me’ and that is why I love it so much.
